April 2007 - News Story:

Big Canoe Fire Department is looking for men and women to join the fire services organization and train to become state certified firefighters serving the community.

The POA is sponsoring a breakfast for all prospective new men and women volunteers on Saturday April 14, 2007 at 8:00 a.m. at the Sconti at Disharoon.  All are welcome to this informative breakfast.

At this breakfast fire services as well as benefits for those who qualify to become firefighters will be discussed. Reservations can be made by calling Tom Alexander at 706 579-3336 or via e-mail to talexan5@windstream.net.  Reservations need to be made by Monday April 9.

This act of volunteerism by our residents will do much to insure the continuity of our ISO 5 rating for home owner insurance purposes, according to Bill Bates, Director of Fire Safety and Security Services.

“The present homeowners’ insurance rate is superior to the rest of Pickens and Dawson Counties and we expect to maintain and improve that rating.  One of the key ingredients of the rating is to have a volunteer force to assist our own staff of security professionals many of which are certified firefighters,” Bill said.

Building a volunteer force of community personnel will insure a timely response to any fire threat to property of the community or its residents.

Volunteers will be professionally trained in fire suppression as well as personal safety while at fire scenes.

“Our people will have the best training available in the state as well as the professional gear that will insure the safety of our people,” Bill said.

The Property Owners Association has made a very strong commitment to the safety of Big Canoe and its residents in purchasing the very best in firefighting apparatus.    Fire engines as well as service vehicles are state of the art with the finest equipment of any fire company in the state.
